The biggest disadvantage to being in an LDR is the inability to be near the person(s) you love. As a community we often joke about the idea of teleportation, and we long to be able to simply stretch our hands across whatever length of distance separates us from one another.
Thankfully, we no longer have to dwell on just wishful thinking. There are several apps available that will allow us to experience the temporary feeling of being able to touch, kiss or even hug one another -though in an alternative form. These apps can help us to make our desire to see or touch one another a little lighter and a little less burdensome until we actually can be physically together.
Telecommunication has traditionally relied on sight and sound. But what if you could touch someone from afar? Touch Room keeps your loved ones within arm’s reach.
Touch Room is a very simple iOS app that allows you to touch someone for afar. To use it you create a room and send the url to friends via text messaging.
Once everyone you’ve invited joins, you will be able to see blue dots representing each person’s finger. When two blue dots touch, they turn orange and both phones vibrate -essentially connecting you both through your smartphones in a very quick and simple way.

Couple takes the idea presented in Touch Room to the next level. An app that could almost have been created specifically for LDR couples, Couple lets you share what they call a Thumbkiss™ through the phone. It’s a quick way to share an intimate moment no matter where you are or how far apart you may be.
Stay close by sharing a thumbkiss no matter where you are. Just open Couple’s thumbkiss feature, wait for your partner to join, match your thumbs on the screen, and voila! You have just been thumbkissed.
This is in addition to its many other features such as drawing together, sending secret photos to one other, sharing videos, voice messaging, building a shared history that you can look back on together and lots more!

While Couple might seem like it could have been made especially for LDRs, Intimate is an app that actually was created specifically for couples who are in a long distance relationship.
We created intimate because we know how tough being in a long distance relationship can be. Our aim with intimate is to bring you and your loved one closer together even though you might be miles apart.
Its functionality includes the ability to send a Fingerkiss, something very similar to Couple’s & Touch Room’s ‘touching’ features. Simply have both partners place their fingers on the screen. When they touch, you share a vibration that lets them know they’ve just kissed.
Some of Intimate’s other features include the ability draw together in real-time, share doodles, calendars, private messaging and more!

The Avocado introduces a new functionality much different from the apps above. It allows you to send hugs back and forth to one another through your phone.
Whether you’re miles apart or continents away, this couples app helps you and your boo stay connected anytime, anywhere.
Here’s how it works: To send a hug, place your device, screen-first, against your heart. The app will buzz and display a message saying that you’ve hugged your partner on the other on. On the other side of the hug, your partner is receives an alert that he or she has received a hug, and is asked whether or not they would like to send a hug back.
This is in addition to its many other features: Sharing Photos, sketches, lists, events and a lot more!

Tools like this aren’t just limited to smartphone apps. There are so many bracelets, pendants and other gadgets out there already in existence that offer alternative ways to ‘touch’ one another from a far.
Just some of these gadgets include “The Bond Bracelet“, “TapTap” and several kinds of Wearable Gadgets. Perhaps in the near future we’ll see even more apps, and gadgets that will help us to stay physically connected from afar!
