Congratulations on surviving another year (or perhaps the first year) of your long-distance relationship!

Spending so much time apart is difficult, especially over the holiday season. But you have made it into a new year. This is a great opportunity for you to reflect on the year just gone—the good memories and the bad.

While you may have already chosen your New Year’s resolutions, there is still time to add just a few more. In terms of your relationship, we realize that your goal (in the case of most LDRs) is to close the distance. But this might still be a long time away, so until then, why not consider setting some short-term goals for the New Year?

Here are some of our favorite examples of New Year’s resolutions for long-distance couples:

1. Meet in Person for the First Time

Meeting your partner for the first time can be one of the best feelings in the world.

For those of you that have not met your partner in person, this is the perfect opportunity to commit to making this the year that it will happen.

Whatever has been stopping you before, whether it is money, fear of travel, or even just nerves, make a resolve to your partner that you will see them this year.

With plenty of careful planning, saving, and a whole year ahead of you, there is no better time to make this promise!

2. Spend More (Physical) Time with Your Partner Than Last Year

Spending more time with your partner may not be easy, but it is time you will both treasure.

Of course, some of you will have met in person before and may even be visiting your partner on a regular basis.

Even so, in most long-distance relationships, time with your partner is short and precious. So vow to spend more time with your partner this year, whether it involves staying a few extra days or taking more trips.

Whatever you do, try to maximize the amount of time you have together and make the most of it.

3. Increase the Amount of Virtual Dates You Share with Your Partner

You can never have too many virtual dates!

We cannot forget, however, that most of our time in a long-distance relationship is spent apart. So as well as committing more physical time to your partner, why not also commit more time to them while you are kept apart?

Try to work towards a goal where you video chat a certain number of times a week, and keep these times free and dedicated to your partner. It will help you feel much closer and keep life from getting in your way.

4. Take a Vacation Together to a Completely New Location

A vacation can bring you together in ways you never imagined before.

One of the more exciting entries on our list is to try visiting a location that is new to the both of you.

Being in a long-distance relationship does not mean you are constrained to just visiting your partner at home. Sometimes you will find yourself yearning to take a holiday like a “normal” couple.

It may be a little more expensive, as you will also have to pay for accommodation. But overall, the experience will be worth it for the memories it will create and the amount it will strengthen your bond with your partner.

5. Send Your First Care Package

A care package is a parcel filled with things that you think your partner will love.

You can fill it with anything from letters to sweet treats, blankets with your scent, or anything else your heart desires.

Receiving a package in the mail can help make up for your absence, as well as make your partner feel extra special. So resolve to send your partner their first care package this year and give them an awesome surprise!

6. Create a Shared Playlist

Music has a way of connecting people, no matter the distance.

Take some time to create a playlist of songs that remind you of each other or that you both enjoy. This can be a mix of romantic tunes, upbeat jams, or even silly songs that make you laugh. Share it with your partner and listen to it together during virtual dates or on your own when you miss them.

7. Try a New Hobby Together

Long-distance relationships are a great opportunity to learn something new as a team.

Pick a hobby you can do remotely, like learning a language, cooking the same recipe, or starting a virtual workout routine. Sharing a common goal will help you grow closer and give you something exciting to talk about during your calls.

8. Write Letters by Hand

Even in a digital world, there’s something magical about receiving a handwritten letter.

This year, commit to writing a few letters to your partner. You can share your thoughts, dreams, or even doodles and poems. A handwritten letter feels deeply personal and will be a keepsake they’ll treasure forever.

9. Watch a New TV Series or Movie Together

Streaming services make it easy to share entertainment from a distance.

Pick a TV show or movie series you’ve both wanted to watch, and commit to watching it together during your virtual dates. Sync up the start times and share your reactions in real-time through voice or video calls. It’s a simple way to bond and feel like you’re spending time together.
